Originally, the valley was divided into three separate city-states: Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur. The city is home to seven UNESCO World Heritage sites, including Patan Durbar Square, Swoyambhunath Stupa, and Pashupatinath Temple. Life in Kathmandu is fast-paced, with narrow streets filled with rickshaws manoeuvring around small shrines and ancient courtyards. It can be a little overwhelming at first, but once you adapt to the culture shock, the city offers a unique and rewarding experience that immerses you fully in modern Nepali life.
Volunteering in Nepal, particularly in Kathmandu Valley or the suburb of Lalitpur, offers you the opportunity to travel to various places within Nepal. The airport provides regular domestic flights to many remote regions, and buses are available to all parts of Nepal, starting from the capital. This means you can use your time during your stay to explore the entire range of Nepal’s Himalayan, hilly, and jungle regions.
Your accommodation in Kathmandu will be more developed than almost all our other sites. You will most likely be staying in a modern house equipped with flushing western-style toilets and continuous running water. Additionally, some of the placements also have hot showers available.
