Best Medical Elective in Nepal
It is George and Anna. We had the best medical elective in Nepal. We are two medical students from the UK studying at the University of Warwick, and we decided to join Volunteer World Nepal’s medical elective volunteer program for our medical elective volunteering placement in Nepal. We are both in our final year of being students and will start working as doctors this summer.
We had a brilliant time doing our medical elective in Nepali hospitals, we spent two weeks in a hospital in Kathmandu and another two weeks in Solukhumbu which was much more rural but more closer to nature, hills and mountains. In both places, everyone was so friendly and welcomed us into the teams. The doctors made an effort to involve us on the ward rounds and asked our opinions on diagnosing or treatment plans. They would always send for us if anything interesting was going such as operations, a new baby born or minor procedures and we even got involved with a few.
The homestays were also fantastic, we feel lucky to have stayed with such wonderful families who gave us great insight into Nepali culture (especially with the delicious food!). Our only negative with the whole trip is that it went too quickly as we had too much fun! We are both hoping to come back to Nepal again in the future and see everyone again.
