What does volunteering with children in Nepal do?
Volunteers have the option to train, teach or assist in teaching at primary or secondary schools located in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan, Nuwakot or any of the small villages situated in the mountains of Salleri. The volunteers are expected to spend up to 6 hours a day at the school. Depending on their level of experience, they may:
Observe the teachers and provide them with feedback during their training sessions:
Initially, you will work closely with the school Principal to identify areas that require teacher training and support. Afterwards, you can take the initiative to develop a framework for providing training. You will spend up to six hours every day at the school, working from an office. Your primary responsibility will be to train teachers, observe lessons, and conduct showcase lessons in your preferred subject. If you are available for two or more months, you can help plan the subject curriculum for the term or year. The school encourages you to introduce new and innovative teaching methods to the classrooms. This will help the school determine the resources required and how to obtain them.
Teach: Offer personal classes on your own:
As a teacher, you should identify where the need for teaching is the highest and step in where necessary. Sometimes, there may not be enough teachers, and you may have to teach a class by yourself. Alternatively, the teacher may already be present, and you can work together to teach the class. The teacher can learn from your teaching methodologies by observing and joining in the teaching process.
Consider being a teacher’s assistant:
As an assistant, you will be working with a local teacher to provide support in all subjects. We encourage you to come up with innovative ways to help teach the children. You may consider bringing in new teaching resources to enhance the learning experience. The age of the children may vary from 4 to 16 years old, and you may choose the age group you prefer to assist.
