Medical Elective in Kathmandu and Salleri
George and Anna had the best medical elective in Kathmandu and Salleri with Volunteer World Nepal. George and Anna, two final-year medical students from the University of Warwick in the UK, embarked on a transformative journey with Volunteer World Nepal for their medical elective. Eager to gain hands-on experience and immerse themselves in a different healthcare environment, they chose Nepal as their destination, splitting their time between Kathmandu and Salleri.
In Kathmandu, George and Anna were introduced to the bustling urban healthcare setting at a major hospital. Here, they had the opportunity to work alongside seasoned Nepali doctors, experiencing firsthand the challenges and rewards of practising medicine in a resource-limited environment. They participated in various departments, from emergency care to general medicine, observing and assisting in diverse medical cases that broadened their clinical skills and knowledge. The dynamic atmosphere of Kathmandu’s hospitals allowed them to witness a wide array of medical conditions, some rarely seen in the UK, thus enriching their medical education.
Their time in Salleri offered a stark contrast, providing a glimpse into rural healthcare in Nepal. The smaller, community-focused clinics and health posts in Salleri required George and Anna to adapt quickly and become resourceful. They were involved in routine check-ups, maternal and child health services, and even some public health initiatives, such as vaccination drives and health education programs. The close-knit community in Salleri warmly welcomed them, and they cherished the personal connections they formed with patients and local healthcare workers.
Volunteer World Nepal facilitated a seamless integration into these healthcare settings, offering support and guidance throughout their placement. The experience not only honed their clinical skills but also deepened their understanding of global health disparities and the importance of cultural competence in medicine.
As George and Anna prepare to begin their careers as doctors this summer, they carry with them invaluable lessons and memories from their medical elective in Nepal. Their time with Volunteer World Nepal has not only shaped their professional outlook but also instilled a lifelong commitment to compassionate and holistic patient care.
